Project Proposal
As ODW is defined as the development platform for OpenSolaris on PPC, OSW will be a perfect 64-bit MP platform on it too. As we boot up Polaris on ODW (which is 32-bit UP), we need at the same time advance it to the 64-bit MP system to fully explore the strength of Solaris.
Same as bootstraping Polaris on ODW, an evaluate of the 64-bit firmware implementation will be performed. For example, compare the firmware features of Apple PowerMac machines, OSW and posibble IBM SLOF implentation if we find ways to install it on OSW; test the compliance of smartfirmware with IEEE1275 standard (including the 64-bit extension) and of OSW with CHRP standard; and identify new features and bugs. An evaluation report and recommendations of new features of firmware on Powerpc platforms and IEEE1275 will be produced with the Polaris project.
