Adding support for Gtalk/Video in Ubuntu
posted by Michael Grunditz on 7th January 2010
Here is what you need to do to add Gtalk/Video in Ubuntu:
If you run into problems , please contact me on : michael.grunditz@genesi-usa.com
Be aware that installing "alien" packages can harm your Ubuntu install , so be prepared to reinstall it if anything goes wrong.
Happy chatting !

1. Install libx264 and the corresponding developer package. 2. Get the source for the gstremer bad plugins. 3. Configure it with libx264 enabled , this is VERY important and add /usr as the prefix. 4. If you have the good gstreamer plugins installed , should be default in ubuntu-desktop, you are ready now. 5. Run Pidgin.
What works:
You can start a video session and be able to see the other part and yourself. You can also here the other part.
Not working:
Audio input. If you try to choose alsa in pidgins options the client will crash.
