Project Proposal
Overview: The research thesis is on the compression and streaming of 3D stereoscopic media, specifically movies. The aim is to find or invent a suitable compression and streaming method suitable for a consumer media player without the need of stereo projectors. This in turn will investigate how broadcasting stations will broadcast 3D stereoscopic movies to set-top boxes.
The playback format is currently being investigated on Mac OS X Leopard with the next stage being the modification of an appleTV set-top box to handle the media file playback.
A stripped down version of freeBSD was initially considered for the media player OS and its peripheral (touch screen remote control) but for consistency with experience and overall performance of OS X I have decided to use the darwin OS for the research.
