Efika 5200B Project
racing enthusiast tool

in category Applications & Software
proposed by Peter Kaltstein on 30th January 2006 (accepted on 11th February 2006)

Project Summary
EFIKA as a the universal tool for motorsport enthusiasts:

Not only acting as a lap timer but more important
combining data of 2-axial acceleration in combination with GPS-data,
being able to give feedback about cornering speeds and g-force of a
whole lap. So the driver can notice, when he has improved his skills
or the setup of the car. In motorraces EFIKA could transfer all
collected data to the support-team and warn the driver about
possible failures. In combination with an IP-Cam, preferably with
MPEG or DivX codec, it would also be a good video-recorder on the
racetrack. If you look on sportscar-portals many driver like to take
videos of their practice and race on the track.

thoughts about project documentation & promo:

It would be planned to use 2 Porsche cars, one
impressive 997 and one youngtimer, with EFIKA-R.E.T.
for photo-documentation and testdriving.

  project frozen

A PalmOS based solution that would cover most of my needs
has been released. Priced at only 14 € it offers a lot of
features:

Because of this the project is frozen. The effort of a duplicate solution
wouldn't make sense, especially because there are too many details to work out,
12V supply and TFT/LCD for car use to name some of them.

But when or if EFIKA evolves into a PDA, it will be worth
reconsidering this custom tailored and Linux-based solution.

  display options, onboard graphic chip
posted by Peter Kaltstein on 16th April 2006

Onboard graphics would be highly appreciated, to
keep the EFIKA case small and connect an external
6-8" TFT.

2nd option would be the simple backlight LCD
Hyundai HP12542R-DYO, 128x64. But lacking a parallel-port,
it would be unclear, how or if that can be connected.
