Project Proposal
Virtual Robotics Laboratory is a project invented by few students of Polish-Japanese Institute of IT (PJIIT http://pjwstk.edu.pl/en). The goal of the project is to provide remote access to our mobile robots equiped with actuators and sensors. In our project we are using Player/Stage robotics framework (http://playerstage.sourceforge.net). One of the most important features is the 24/7 availability of provided hardware. We wish to try new PPC machine which would be able to replace our main Intel-based server (currently P4/Xeon 1.5GHz 1GB RAM, HDD 250GB SATA). The roles of the machine are: 1) provide 24/7 access to our robotics services (passthrough proxy, authentication and remote access authorisation) 2) serve PHP-based main web site pages (http://vlab.pjwstk.edu.pl) 3) serve J2EE-based control panel web service for registered users http://cp.vlab.pjwstk.edu.pl (Jboss on IBM JDK 1.4.2 + Spring + Hibernate + PostgreSQL = main reason for hardware upgrades!) 4) act as a gateway and DHCP server for our laboratory local network. All software (both network and robotics related) will be running on Gentoo Linux which is most preferred Linux distribution for our software. Participation in 8641D project would be also an great opportunity to see how Player/Stage software behaves on PPC hardware architecture. Our project is both educational and commercial with demo read-only access for non-registered users.
